The Incidence of Type 1 Diabetes Is Increasing in Both Children and Young Adults in Northern Italy
The incidence of type 1 diabetes in Northern Italy has been increasing in both children and young adults, researchers concluded after assessing the trends in incidence rates for 1984 to 2004.
The study identified a total of 1,773 incident cases of type 1 diabetes, with the average annual increases in incidence rates similar in children and young adults at 3.3 percent. The researchers analyzed temporal trends in rates using Poisson regression models. The period 2000-2004 showed a 60 percent higher risk in ages 0 to 29 years (specifically, among the 0-to-14 age group and the 15-to-29 age group), compared to the period from 1984 to 1989.
